While changes at LAX remain uncertain, Hollywood Burbank Airport is on the verge of significant updates. On October 13, the airport plans to replace its current two terminals with a new, larger single terminal. This $1.3 billion project maintains 14 gates but expands the terminal’s size by about 50%. The new facility will cover 355,000 square feet, enabling more space and better technology, while aligning with safety and accessibility standards.
The airport, built in 1930 and managed by the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, remains a favored option for local travelers seeking a simpler alternative to LAX. Tensions have existed between airport officials and nearby suburban neighborhoods due to its location in the San Fernando Valley.
The current facility fails to meet state seismic and FAA design standards, presenting safety concerns. Nine airlines operate from Burbank, serving approximately 30 nonstop destinations. In 2025, the airport handled around 6.2 million passengers. The redesign increases the terminal-to-runway distance from 257 feet to about 880 feet, ensuring FAA compliance.
LAX faced delays in its SkyLink automated people mover introduction due to technical and legal setbacks. The SkyLink contractor anticipated an opening date beyond October 6, focusing on thorough testing to ensure safety and reliability.
Burbank’s terminal replacement received voter approval in 2016, and construction began in 2024. The new terminal, which includes sculptures by Cliff Garten and artwork by Glenn Kaino, will be located north of the existing one, set to be demolished. Access points will change to Winona Avenue and Hollywood Way. Operations and flight numbers will remain unchanged, with hours staying at 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Within the new terminal, walking distances have been reduced to 1,285 feet, down from 1,600 feet, with larger corridors and accessible power plugs at every seat. Baggage claim will transition indoors.
Jacobs manages the project, with Holder, Pankow, TEC, Joint Venture handling design-build tasks, and architecture provided by Corgan and CannonDesign. Shuttle services will run between the new terminal and local train stations. Passengers will continue to board planes via the tarmac, a feature many enjoy.
The terminal will feature 14 food service units, including Flavor Town, Spring Chicken, Farm Table Bistro, Jones Coffee, and more. A new parking structure will offer 2,007 spots, including 400 valet options, maintaining a total capacity of 6,637 spaces. Shuttle buses will connect the new terminal with rental car facilities and bus stops.
