Hollywood Casino Aurora Experiences Significant Growth at New Complex

Hollywood Casino Aurora has seen significant success since opening its new $360 million land-based complex. In its first full month, the casino brought in $17.4 million in revenue and attracted nearly 156,000 visitors. This achievement propelled it to rank third among Illinois’ 17 casinos in July, as reported by the Illinois Gaming Board.

Formerly operating on a riverboat, the switch to a land-based location has doubled both revenue and attendance compared to the previous year. Jay Snowden, CEO and president of Penn Entertainment, highlighted the positive feedback and increased patronage during an earnings call.

The new complex, located near Interstate 88 and the Chicago Premium Outlets mall, offers 1,200 gaming positions, a 226-room hotel, a 12,000-square-foot event center, and diverse dining options. These amenities have made Hollywood Casino Aurora a popular choice for visitors.

In July, Rivers Casino Des Plaines led the state with $46.7 million in adjusted gross receipts, followed by Wind Creek Chicago Southland at $19.7 million. Hollywood Casino Aurora’s transition to dry land has proven effective; it was ranked ninth in revenue while still a riverboat earlier in 2026.

The shift to a land-based operation has doubled our business in the first month, and we continue to receive positive responses from guests.

Penn Entertainment’s investments extend beyond Aurora to Hollywood Casino Joliet, which also transitioned from a riverboat. Joliet’s move resulted in sustained revenue and attendance growth, despite not having a hotel.

The Aurora complex aims to appeal to both gamblers and those drawn to the available amenities. Snowden mentioned that the proximity to a regional outlet mall could further enhance visitor numbers. The complex also features a food hall and restaurants from well-known chefs Giada De Laurentiis and Stephanie Izard.

Illinois’ 2019 law change, allowing casinos to move to land, has stimulated new developments. Penn Entertainment’s strategy for Joliet and Aurora reflects this shift. Future projects include the $1.7 billion Bally’s Entertainment Complex in River West and American Place’s permanent casino expected to open in Waukegan in 2028.
