House GOP Proposal Aims to Bar Fauci from Federal Work
The House GOP has introduced a proposal that would prevent Dr. Anthony Fauci from working in the federal government again. This follows his recent appearance at a dramatic hearing on Capitol Hill. During the session with the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, overseen by Sen. Rand Paul, Dr. Fauci chose to invoke the Fifth Amendment over 100 times.
Republicans criticized the former public health official for his actions. In response, Rep. Rich McCormick from Georgia proposed a new bill. This legislation would not only bar Fauci from returning to his previous role but might also lead to criminal prosecution.
During a video shared with Fox News Digital, McCormick expressed his views. He stated, “We saw him evade so many questions, pleading the Fifth… that’s fine, that’s your constitutional right. But you also have the right, if your till comes up short at Burger King, when your boss asks you why are you short $20 in your cash register — if you plead the Fifth, that’s your… ability, but I can fire you.” He believes that similar principles should apply within the government.
The bill, named the STOP the SWAMP Act, aims to prevent federal employment for those refusing to answer specific questions from lawmakers or if they are found guilty of perjury. This is according to a news release on McCormick’s official website. Furthermore, the bill would allow Congress members to refer hearing witnesses for prosecution if they are discovered to have unlawfully withheld information from legislators.
Although there are currently no criminal charges against Fauci, he has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Nonetheless, Paul, who is known for criticizing Fauci, stated that his committee would start proceedings to hold the doctor in contempt of Congress after the session.
Fauci’s appearance before the Senate’s GOP-led panel was amid increased scrutiny regarding his management of the COVID-19 pandemic. This comes after the release of his diary, which he maintained during the health crisis. The exposed diary entries, released by Paul prior to the hearing, featured Fauci reflecting on his newfound fame during the pandemic and discussing the virus’s origins.
Some of these diary entries suggest that Fauci took credit for policies influencing school closures during the pandemic. School closures were one of the most contested aspects of the government’s response to COVID. However, Fauci told the House Oversight Committee in January 2024, “I did not close the schools.”
Dr. Fauci was the primary face representing the U.S. government’s response to COVID-19. His role prompted both praise and criticism.
