Season 3 of the HBO series House of the Dragon demonstrates how storytelling can be riveting even in quiet, tense conversations. The initial episodes signal the prequel’s progression towards war. After Jacaerys’ death, Rhaenyra seeks vengeance. She kills Ser Otto Hightower, highlighting her determination to avenge her son.
Episode 2: Changing Alliances
Otto Hightower’s demise alters many dynamics. His daughter, Alicent Hightower, supports Rhaenyra, allowing her entrance to King’s Landing. Alicent considers fleeing with Halaena but cannot. Discovering her father’s corpse, her expressions of disbelief convey shock over Rhaenyra’s actions.
Episodes featuring battles and dragons introduce a different approach in Episode 3, marking a significant milestone. Daemon Targaryen, with dragons Vermithor, Caraxes, and Silverwing, confronts Ormund Hightower, announcing the war’s end and Rhaenyra’s rule. Despite being outnumbered, Daemon’s aerial advantage prevails. Ormund surprisingly submits to Rhaenyra.
A twist follows as Daemon demands Alicent’s youngest son, Daeron Targaryen. Ormund quickly hands over a boy, later revealed as an imposter, not Alicent’s son. This deception exposes another Hightower bait-and-switch, catching Rhaenyra’s team off guard.
Episode 3: A Kingdom in Turmoil
King’s Landing’s wealth evaporates, its treasury pillaged. Rhaenyra encounters Alicent, seeking answers about the gold. Alicent, wearied, genuinely lacks knowledge, noting court dissent. Alicent proposes a trade: declare Aegon’s death for her son’s safety. Rhaenyra initially appears swayed but ultimately declines, keeping Alicent and Halaena within reach.
Despite claiming the throne, Rhaenyra remains queen of a divided realm. Haunted by visions of Jacaerys, her mental state is fragile. Her desire for unity clashes with Daemon’s ambition for conquest and Mysaria’s plea to aid the kingdom’s people.
To solidify her position, Rhaenyra must validate Aegon’s demise. A tense dinner with Corlys Velaryon erupts over legitimacy issues. Refusing to legitimize Addam and Alyn provokes Corlys’s anger. In response, Rhaenyra seeks to improve her public image. She hosts a banquet for food-hoarding lords, serving them rats to illustrate commoners’ plight.
Rhaenyra’s city tour to distribute grain offers a contrasting image to past rulers. Despite these efforts, legitimacy remains elusive.
Ormund Hightower’s Betrayal
The episode’s final twist centers on Ormund Hightower’s betrayal. The fake prince reveals deceptive intentions. Ormund’s allegiance falters; his army seizing Tumbleton shatters peace. Rhaenyra contemplates the burning Green banners; her resolve solidifies. The narrative crescendos with her readiness to embrace war, fueled by Targaryen fire.
The first three episodes of Season 3 are currently streaming on HBO Max.
