Fred Vogler, the principal sound designer since 2003, finds the effect astonishing. “In the past, you’d get the guitar amp or drums in that mic,” he noted. “Now, you hear just the vocal.”

Line Array System Overhaul
The L1, L’Acoustics’ new line array, represents a significant shift in design. A line array typically involves multiple speakers suspended vertically. This allows precise sound shaping across large spaces. The L1 mitigates physical gaps between speakers by integrating them into a modified cabinet design. This system is 30% smaller and more powerful than its K Series predecessor.
For the Bowl, reducing noise variance is crucial. In the past, there was a six to nine-decibel variance between the closest and farthest seats. The L1 reduces that gap to three decibels. This means a consistent audio experience regardless of seating.
AI on the Mix
Source Intelligence uses machine learning to isolate vocals amidst live sound chaos. Originally, this technology was a tool for DJs to separate stereo track components. L’Acoustics adapted it for live stage use. This innovation allows engineers to emphasize vocals without increasing unwanted noise.
The system is being used by major artists like Harry Styles, The Weeknd, and Bruno Mars. Their engineers have noted substantial improvements in the overall mix quality.
Embracing Immersive Audio
The season’s third component is an immersive sound system — L’Acoustics’ L-ISA platform. This system wraps around the entire amphitheater, offering spatial audio.
L-ISA has two modes: a room engine simulating enclosed spaces and a surround object mode that spatializes sounds. Scott Sugden describes it as the most extensive immersive sound deployment worldwide.
Fred Vogler has been testing the system. He aims for subtlety: “We don’t want it drawing attention. We want it to feel missed if off.”
