How Gold Mining Is Intensifying the Spread of Ebola in Congo

For decades, mining has served as a critical source of livelihood in a remote hill town in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This industry, however, is currently exacerbating a severe Ebola outbreak.

The recent removal of gold miner Mumbere Saidi’s disinfected body by Red Cross workers in Mongbwalu, Congo, highlights the gravity of the situation. Mr. Saidi’s tragic death underscores the connection between gold mining and the Ebola epidemic in this region.

Saidi, a farmer, relocated to the gold mines in northeastern Congo after his farm was attacked by a local Islamic State faction. He traversed 200 miles through a perilous conflict zone to reach Mongbwalu. In this isolated mining town, he engaged in arduous labor to pan for gold. During prosperous times, the 27-year-old sent modest sums back to his family. Yet, during difficult periods, he struggled to provide for his wife and young daughter.

Saidi believed he had found safety until last week when Ebola struck him at his residence. “The disease got him,” explained his brother and fellow miner, Kondu Ganda, referencing a euphemism for Ebola commonly used in the town.

Mongbwalu, located in Ituri province, has attracted individuals seeking employment from across Congo for over a century, due to its rich gold resources. Now, the town is at the heart of an Ebola outbreak sweeping the area, with gold trade inadvertently contributing to its spread.

Experts trace the outbreak’s origins back to Mongbwalu, potentially beginning as early as February. However, detection was delayed until May 15 due, in part, to it being caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a lesser-known virus for which no treatment exists.
