Extreme heat is becoming more common worldwide with longer and more frequent heat waves. Rising temperatures can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses like heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Experts offer guidance on staying cool during such conditions, even without air conditioning.
Keep Cool Without Air Conditioning
Hydration and cooling are crucial to avoid heat-related discomfort and illness. If you lack air conditioning or if it doesn’t seem enough, consider these methods:
- Mist your skin with cool or room-temperature water.
- Block windows that receive afternoon sun with a blanket or dark sheet to keep heat out.
- Open windows at night and use fans to circulate air if you don’t have A.C.
- Wipe your forehead with a cool cloth.
- Avoid outdoor strenuous exercise when possible.
- Add ice cubes to your water bottle, especially outdoors.
- Avoid using the stove or oven if possible.
Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion
Heat exhaustion symptoms in adults include heavy sweating, cold, pale, and clammy skin, a fast but weak pulse, nausea or vomiting, muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, headaches, or fainting. In case of these symptoms, it’s recommended to:
- Sip on water.
- Move to a cooler location if possible.
- Loosen your clothing.
- Take a cool bath or apply cool, wet cloths to your body.
Seek immediate medical attention if vomiting occurs or symptoms worsen or last more than an hour.
Recognize Signs of Heat Stroke
Symptoms of heat stroke include an elevated body temperature of 103°F or higher, hot, red, dry or damp skin, a fast and strong pulse, headache, dizziness, nausea, or fainting. Individuals may stumble or appear less coordinated. You may notice symptoms like headache, nausea, or dizziness upon talking to them.
If someone exhibits these symptoms, call 911 immediately. Move the person to a cooler area, if available, and use cool cloths or a bath to help lower their body temperature.
