Illegal Immigrant Fatally Shoots California Woman, Then Takes Own Life

The Department of Homeland Security reported a tragic incident involving the fatal shooting of a California woman outside a Sacramento County Panera Bread. Shalini Thakur, 38, was shot by Rohit Rohit, an illegal immigrant from India who had been stalking her for several months. Despite her attempts to escape, Rohit managed to shoot her in the head before fleeing the scene in a car. Unfortunately, responding police officers found that Rohit had taken his own life with a firearm.

Rohit had reportedly entered the United States illegally through Arizona. He was initially detained by U.S. Border Patrol but was released under the current administration’s policies. These policies allow migrants entry to the U.S. after receiving a court date. The Department of Homeland Security emphasized that this tragedy was preventable and criticized the release of Rohit into the country.

Shalini Thakur had been granted a restraining order against Rohit. She had known him as a DoorDash delivery driver. He frequently parked outside her home and engaged her in conversation. This unwanted attention escalated over the months, with Thakur finding an Apple AirTag on her car and receiving threats from Rohit, including demands for marriage.

Rohit’s actions included deflating Thakur’s car tires and following her to work. Reports also indicate that he acquired a copy of her apartment key, allowing him unauthorized access. Despite her consistent reports to the police, the situation had not been adequately addressed, leading to this fatal outcome.

Authorities have criticized the policies that allowed Rohit to remain in the country, urging for changes to prevent such incidents in the future. This incident underlines the ongoing debate regarding immigration policies and public safety.
