Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, both Democrats, received backlash for what appeared to be a light-hearted interaction at the 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan. The moment occurred during a solemn reading of the names of those who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks.
A Fox News broadcast showed Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez seemingly smiling and laughing while paying respects at the memorial. The incident sparked criticism on social media, with individuals like Steve Guest, former Sen. Ted Cruz staffer, expressing disapproval of their demeanor.
“Disgraceful,” Guest commented regarding the pair’s perceived levity. “AOC and Mamdani look happy,” he added.
Others, including Meghan McCain, publicly questioned their behavior. McCain expressed her anger with a straightforward query: “Why the f— are these two laughing?”
Despite the backlash, some defended Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez. Michael Ragusa, a member of former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s team, suggested the moment was taken out of context. According to Ragusa, they were merely greeting each other.
“The videos of [them] laughing are not true. I was standing next to them the whole time,” Ragusa tweeted.
The incident stirred reactions beyond social media. Councilwoman Inna Vernikov criticized Mamdani for attending the memorial after families of 9/11 victims requested he stay away. She voiced her discontent over his presence alongside mourning families.
Despite the video capturing laughter, reports indicated that Mayor Mamdani also spent time somberly with other officials like New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill. However, the footage of the jovial interaction with Ocasio-Cortez remained a focal point for critics.
Political figures like Rep. Randy Fine and Rep. Wesley Hunt voiced their disapproval, emphasizing the need for respect during such a memorial service. Hunt pointed out, “There is a time and a place for politics. This isn’t it. Ground Zero is sacred ground.”
Questions about the nature of their conversation lingered, as critics continued to voice their opposition online. Despite attempts to contact both politicians, no clarification was immediately provided.
