On Saturday evening, a shooting near the White House resulted in two people being injured, including a suspect, according to law enforcement sources. The incident involved the firing of approximately 15 to 30 shots near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
Details of the Incident
Multiple CBS News reporters on the scene reported hearing what sounded like gunfire at around 6 p.m. ET. U.S. Secret Service initially responded by ushering reporters inside the White House complex.
Lockdown and Status Update
Following the incident, the White House was placed under lockdown, which was later lifted, allowing the press to return to the North Lawn. Two individuals, identified as a suspect and a potential bystander, were transported to a nearby hospital. Reports indicate the suspect remains in critical condition, while the other individual is in serious condition.
Response by Secret Service
The sources revealed that Secret Service agents were targeted during the incident. They retaliated, though none of the agents was injured seriously enough to require hospitalization. Several Secret Service officers were assessed at the scene and did not need hospital care.
