Independent Lawmaker Helen Haines Injured in Vehicle Attack
On Tuesday, Australian police charged a man in connection with an attack on independent lawmaker Helen Haines. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in Wangaratta, a city in southeastern Australia.
According to authorities, Haines was retrieving items from the trunk of her parked car when the attacker allegedly drove past in a Toyota Land Cruiser. He reportedly reversed and rammed into Haines multiple times, injuring her severely.
Haines, 65, lost one of her legs as a result of the attack. Brendan Nugent, from nearby Tarrawingee, faces charges including intentionally causing serious injury and harming a federal official. The motive for the attack remains unclear, but police have described it as deliberate.
Helen Haines has represented Indi in parliament since 2019 and retained her seat during the 2025 elections with a significant margin of more than 18,000 votes. Known for her advocacy on climate action, rural healthcare, and small businesses, Haines is also recognized for supporting Indigenous rights.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Haines for her kindness, compassion, and diligent advocacy. Wangaratta Mayor Irene Grant expressed the community’s shock over the incident, noting Haines’ respect and dedication.
Locals, such as florist Jess Woodrow, shared sentiments of disbelief regarding the attack. Woodrow described Haines as a friendly and well-liked figure in the community.
Nugent has been in custody since the attack and will face court on Wednesday. His father, Rod Nugent, described Haines as a valued member of the community and pledged cooperation with the police.
