The Indiana Fever secured a 95-91 overtime win against the Atlanta Dream on Sunday, maintaining their hold on fourth place in the WNBA standings. Makayla Timpson delivered a career-high performance with 20 points, including the first three field goals in the overtime period.
Indiana’s record now stands at 23-12, while Atlanta holds a 21-13 tally. The top four teams gain homecourt advantage in the playoff’s opening round. Allisha Gray of Atlanta matched her career-best with 32 points, but it wasn’t enough to secure a victory against the Fever.
Kelsey Mitchell’s key layup with 13.6 seconds remaining in overtime contributed to her 20-point total, marking her 19th consecutive game with at least 20 points. Caitlin Clark also shone with 26 points and nine assists, hitting two critical free throws after Atlanta closed the gap to 93-91.
Mitchell’s crucial 3-pointer with 1:05 left in regulation tied the game at 81-81. Despite Atlanta’s chance to win, they missed three shots on their final possession, sending the game into overtime. Sophie Cunningham’s contributions, including celebrating her 30th birthday with a basket and free throw, helped give Indiana a 78-77 lead earlier in the game.
The Dream faced challenges with Jordin Canada out due to illness and Brionna Jones absent with a left leg injury. Coach Karl Smesko expressed uncertainty about Jones’ return. Jaylen Sherrod, in her third WNBA season, made her first career start filling in the gap.
Atlanta initially trailed 36-27 in the second period, but a determined 17-4 run led by Angel Reese put them ahead 44-40 at halftime. Reese recorded 15 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists. Meanwhile, Mitchell needed overtime to complete her scoring streak, having managed only five points in the first half before adding key baskets in the second half.
