NYPD Officers Fatally Shoot Man Advancing with Knife in Manhattan
On Sunday afternoon, NYPD officers fatally shot a 54-year-old man, Wei Chan, after he allegedly advanced toward them with a large butcher knife. The incident occurred in a Lower East Side apartment building.
The shooting took place shortly after 4 p.m. at 126 Ludlow Street. Officers responded to multiple 911 calls about an assault in progress. Upon entering the building, officers discovered a blood trail leading up a staircase, according to NYPD Assistant Chief Melissa Eger.
As the officers moved upstairs, they encountered Wei Chan descending with the knife. Despite multiple commands for Chan to drop the weapon, he continued advancing, leading officers to open fire. Chan was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Chan had no known criminal history with the department, but he did have a documented mental health history. Officers also found Chan’s 75-year-old father, Cheung Chan, with a head laceration. Investigators reported that Wei Chan had injured his father before police arrived. The elder Chan is expected to survive.
The officers involved were taken to a hospital for evaluation. Assistant Chief Eger emphasized their bravery, stating, “Their actions are a reminder of how officers run towards danger and not away from it.”
Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the situation, confirming an internal investigation and the release of body-camera footage as standard protocol. This incident and the circumstances surrounding it remain under investigation.
