On Sunday, Indonesian authorities apprehended two Russian nationals suspected of attempting to smuggle drugs into Bali. This arrest followed a high-speed car chase that resulted in several pedestrians being struck on the popular tourist island.
The suspects, a 52-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man, were found with nearly eight kilograms (18 pounds) of hashish in a suitcase carried from Thailand. This information comes from a statement released by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN).
BNN chief Suyudi Ario Seto confirmed, “We have seized the evidence, 7.8 kilograms of hashish.” The woman, referred to by her initials “KK,” arrived at Soekarno-Hatta airport in Jakarta. She then drove a rental car to Bali to meet the man, known as “SK,” at a seaport on Friday.
The agency disclosed that the man collected the woman and took her and the suitcase to a currently unknown place before attempting to escape. Officials reported that SK “drove the vehicle at very high speed and recklessly,” hitting several pedestrians before being captured.
Both individuals were detained on Friday. The agency shared images of the suspects and a photo of the suitcase containing the alleged drugs. BNN has launched an investigation to assess whether these individuals are linked to a broader drug syndicate.
Indonesia enforces strict anti-drug legislation, including the death penalty for traffickers. However, the country has paused executions for several years. Despite the moratorium, numerous traffickers remain on death row. The last execution occurred in 2016, when four individuals, including an Indonesian and three Nigerians, were executed for drug offenses.
In December 2024, Indonesia removed Mary Jane Veloso from death row, allowing her return to the Philippines. Additionally, the remaining “Bali Nine” drug ring members were sent back to Australia after serving extensive prison terms. Earlier this year, in March, two British men received prison sentences of nine and 11 years for smuggling cocaine into Bali. Last August, police arrested a Peruvian woman in Bali for allegedly concealing cocaine in a sex toy and hiding drugs in her underwear.
