Authorities revealed that key braking systems failed to deploy during a deadly crash involving an Amazon cargo jet at Miami International Airport. The incident occurred on Sunday, resulting in five fatalities after the Boeing 767 overran the runway and collided with two vehicles.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), while the aircraft’s wheel brakes were engaged, data suggests the speed brakes and thrust reversers were not activated. NTSB investigator Chihoon Shin stated, “No indication in the recorded data shows speed brakes or thrust reversers were deployed.”
The aircraft’s performance during the landing is under review to determine normalcy and identify what functioned correctly.
Shin mentioned that investigators plan to interview the pilots involved. Speculation on the landing procedures is avoided until a thorough analysis of the flight parameters is completed. “Understanding the crew’s manipulation of controls is crucial,” he added.
NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy provided details on the experience of the pilots. The captain, aged 55, had 7,145 flight hours, with a Class 1 medical certificate from March 2026. The first officer, 37, had 2,655 flight hours, with a medical certificate dated April 2026.
Officials assured there were no hazardous materials onboard the aircraft. The cargo mainly consisted of contact lenses, weighing 32,222 pounds. Homendy confirmed, “Cargo was primarily contact lenses and a flight kit.”
The crash of Prime Air Flight 7598 led to five deaths and five injuries. The tragedy unfolded when the plane crushed a van carrying seven individuals on airport property. Subsequently, the aircraft breached the airport fence and hit another civilian vehicle before halting near a parking lot.
