Federal investigators have arrived in South Florida to uncover the cause of a fatal incident at Miami International Airport. The crash involved an Amazon cargo plane and occurred on Sunday afternoon. Witnesses are beginning to share their experiences and observations from the scene.
Grace Mercado, who was in a vehicle with her partner, recounted the events as they unfolded. She shared, “We heard a noise, and he said, ‘Oh my goodness. Is that a plane crash?'” Looking up from her phone, she saw the Amazon cargo plane had overshot the runway, crossed a Miami-Dade street, and stopped. “It was extremely loud,” Mercado described. “It was like a shake; honestly, I can’t compare it to anything else.” Disoriented by the scene, Mercado added, “The plane was up in smoke. It seemed unreal, like something from a movie.”
While initial responders were not immediately visible, they arrived rapidly. “There weren’t any ambulances at first,” Mercado stated. “But in under a minute, they were on the scene. It was insane.” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported that over 60 units and about 200 personnel attended the crash site, with first responders arriving quickly. Five people lost their lives, and five others suffered injuries.
Our hearts are with the victims and their families following Sunday’s tragic cargo plane crash,
stated Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and are keeping everyone who was injured in our thoughts and prayers.
Mercado observed a lot of smoke but no movements in or around the crashed plane. She commented, “It’s something you don’t see in real life. So, it’s surreal.” Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators will work to determine why the aircraft left the runway and crashed. The identities of the victims remain undisclosed.
