The National Park Service (NPS) is conducting an investigation following reports of a serious fall at Yosemite National Park on Saturday. Witnesses suggested the incident might have been fatal. The victim, a 23-year-old man, fell at Nevada Fall, an area known for its treacherous conditions with steep drops and a powerful waterfall.
According to a statement by NPS to Fox News Digital, the investigation centers on the events involving the individual at Nevada Fall on June 20, 2026. The area has a history of dangerous falls. Park rangers and the Yosemite Search and Rescue team responded to the incident after receiving reports that someone had gone over the fall. They carried out search and recovery operations below the fall.
“The National Park Service is investigating an incident involving a 23-year-old male at Nevada Fall in Yosemite National Park on June 20, 2026,” the NPS stated.
Social media users reported witnessing the incident, with one Reddit user detailing a distressing scene where multiple people were affected. A group of friends was reportedly pulled by the current; one girl was saved using a branch, but another person was swept over the fall.
The victim reportedly fell while attempting to save a woman near the waterfall, as per eyewitness accounts. According to one user, after the girl was rescued, there were prolonged efforts by a helicopter and rescue hikers to search the area.
“A person nearby handed the girl a branch and she was rescued but the other person couldn’t attach to anything and went with the current to the fall,” a witness described.
Nevada Fall is infamous for its steep, slippery, and hazardous conditions. It features a waterfall with strong currents and a 600-foot descent. A Reddit user commented on the granite’s deceptively slippery nature and the intense strength of the current, emphasizing the lack of anything to hold onto near the falls.
An eyewitness further stated the deadly risks associated with the area. They noted that survival from a fall there, even with protective equipment, is unlikely. Concerns were raised about the safety and number of visitors during peak months, as wandering on slick rocks poses significant danger.
