In a dramatic ending at Michigan Stadium, the Iowa Hawkeyes secured a thrilling victory over the Michigan Wolverines. Iowa quarterback Hank Brown threw a decisive 16-yard touchdown pass to Reece Vander Zee as time expired. This play led No. 17 Iowa to a 20-19 victory against No. 18 Michigan.
Brown expressed his excitement after the game, saying, “To be able to silence a stadium like that, there’s no greater feeling.”
The game-winning drive covered 91 yards, with a crucial unnecessary roughness penalty against Michigan aiding Iowa’s progress. A key 29-yard pass from Brown to Addison Ostrenga set the stage for the final touchdown, leaving just two seconds on the clock.
Brown attributed their preparation to the victory, saying, “We prep for situations like these throughout the week in practice all the time. Why do you prepare for it? For a moment like that.”
Earlier, Michigan had taken the lead with a 49-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bryce Underwood to JJ Buchanan early in the fourth quarter. This was their second scoring connection of the game. The Wolverines struggled to maintain control, with coach Kyle Whittingham commenting, “We would’ve liked to run the clock out. That was disappointing.”
Iowa initially took the lead in the fourth quarter through Brown’s pass to Vander Zee. However, Underwood and Buchanan responded with a touchdown that put Michigan back in the lead, although a subsequent 2-point conversion attempt failed.
Later in the game, Iowa faced a pivotal fourth down at the Michigan 28 but was set back by a penalty. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz opted for a 51-yard field goal attempt by Caden Buhr, which missed the mark, with 2:33 to play in the game.
Iowa’s schedule continues with a challenging road game against Ohio State. Meanwhile, Michigan will aim to recover in an away game against Minnesota.
