Apple’s iPhone 18, expected to release in September 2026, may become one of the first major consumer products influenced by what experts term “AI inflation.” Analysts predict increased costs for key smartphone components due to the rising demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
According to The Washington Post, iPhone 18 models might see a price increase of at least $100 compared to similar models from the previous year. This increase reflects a broader trend where Apple is considering raising prices across its current iPhone lineup.
Reasons for Increasing iPhone Prices
A primary factor in the price hike is the global shortage of memory chips caused by the growth in AI infrastructure. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Meta are investing significantly in AI-focused data centers, which require substantial amounts of specialized memory products.
Due to the shift toward high-bandwidth memory for AI servers, manufacturers such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have limited supplies for consumer electronics, tightening the availability of memory chips for smartphones.
TrendForce has noted that memory prices have entered a “major upcycle” starting from late 2025, exerting pressure on smartphone manufacturers like Apple. This market prediction suggests that the cost of the iPhone 18 family might increase by 10 to 20 percent.
Analyst Jeff Pu from GF Securities forecasts that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models could cost $200 to $300 more than previous models due to higher expenses for advanced processors, DRAM memory, and NAND storage, as reported by Forbes.
Impact of AI on Consumer Prices
The possibility of increased iPhone prices underscores a larger economic trend labeled as AI inflation. A single top-tier AI server might consume more memory than a consumer smartphone, prompting tech companies to vie for the same components.
Reports suggest that the massive scales of investment in AI infrastructure are altering semiconductor supply chains, driving up costs throughout the tech sector.
Apple signaled its struggle with absorbing rising component costs earlier, with price increases on several Mac and iPad products in June, some configurations noting hikes of up to $500. Analysts predicted that iPhones would follow.
Anticipated Features of the iPhone 18
Apart from pricing, Apple’s launch is set to emphasize AI capabilities. According to TrendForce, the iPhone 18 Pro will feature Apple’s new A20 Pro processor, built on TSMC’s 2-nanometer process, improving on-device AI performance and efficiency.
The launch may also present upgraded cooling systems, better cameras, and larger batteries. The September event is expected to unveil Apple’s first foldable iPhone, potentially priced over $2,000.
Implications for Consumers
If predictions hold true, the iPhone 18 may lead a broader trend of rising tech product prices. Experts highlight that Apple is not alone, as major Android manufacturers depend on similar suppliers, suggesting potential price increases across the smartphone market.
For consumers experiencing wider inflation, the iPhone 18 might signal the AI boom’s influence spreading beyond data centers to everyday devices.
