The President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, has evoked powerful wartime sentiments as Iran fortifies its position against the United States and Israel. His comments are timely, as President Donald Trump mentioned ongoing negotiations for a potential agreement with Tehran promising either a meaningful deal or a complete withdrawal.
Though Iran and Washington have found common ground on several aspects, a finalized agreement remains uncertain, with further negotiations required.
During an interview in New York City, Iranian President Pezeshkian shared insights with Martha MacCallum from Fox News Channel. He linked the anniversary of Iran’s victory at the 1982 battle of Khorramshahr to broader geopolitical arenas, stating, “Khorramshahr today is Iran, the Persian Gulf, and the Strait of Hormuz.” He emphasized the cultural importance of “resistance, self-sacrifice, and repelling aggression.”
Analysts view Pezeshkian’s remarks as deliberately tapping into the deep ideological roots of national resistance epitomized by the Iran-Iraq War. Dr. Omar Mohammed of George Washington University noted that this narrative draws parallels between past defenses and current geopolitical tensions.
“May 24 marks the anniversary of the 1982 liberation of Khorramshahr, a turning point of the Iran-Iraq War,” Mohammed said.
The historical recapture symbolizes massive civilian courage and sacrifice against foreign invasion, becoming a foundational myth like Russia’s Great Patriotic War.
Mohammed highlighted that these comments, including references to volunteer forces versus professional armies, indicate a strategic escalation by Iran, especially in relation to the Strait of Hormuz.
The rhetoric around Khorramshahr is not just symbolic but is a calculated stance of Iran’s willingness for war rather than negotiation.
