Iran’s Lead Negotiator Calls for Diplomacy Amid Hostilities

Iran’s lead negotiator, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has indicated that negotiations with the United States could still occur despite renewed hostilities. Ghalibaf, a significant figure and pragmatic conservative in Iran, stressed the importance of diplomacy and negotiations in advancing Iran’s national interests.

In a statement published on Wednesday, Ghalibaf emphasized Iran’s intent to defend itself both in combat and through diplomatic avenues. This statement comes in the wake of intensified American airstrikes targeting Iranian military sites and infrastructure, provoking Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks on U.S. bases in the Middle East.

The cease-fire between Tehran and Washington has been declared over by both parties. A previously agreed memorandum of understanding, outlining a 14-point cease-fire, is now considered defunct. In strategic developments, both nations have claimed control over the Strait of Hormuz, an essential channel for oil and gas shipping. Iran announced its closure of the strait, while the U.S. has resumed a naval blockade of Iran’s southern shores.

Despite these tensions, Ghalibaf seems to offer a conciliatory gesture by advocating for coordination between military and diplomatic channels. He asserted, “We must fear neither war nor negotiations. War and negotiations are two methods of protecting the national interest.” He clarified that the pursuit of negotiations doesn’t equate to submission.
