Tehran’s decision to retaliate for Israeli strikes in Lebanon may initially appear reckless. However, for Iran, this move demonstrates its commitment to supporting regional allies and preventing shifts in regional power dynamics.
In recent weeks, Iran has been vocal against Israeli actions targeting Hezbollah, its crucial ally in Lebanon. Although Iran expressed discontent, it refrained from responding to strikes that remained concentrated in southern Lebanon. That stance shifted when Israel expanded its operations towards the southern outskirts of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut. This area is where Hezbollah holds significant influence.
The decision to retaliate carries risks. Yet, Iran sees these risks as essential in countering what it perceives as attempts by Israel to alter the power structure in the region. This comes amidst ongoing negotiations between Iran and Washington to resolve the conflict.
“Failure to respond would signal weakness,” remarked Ali Vaez, a senior analyst at the International Crisis Group.
Sadegh Larijani, chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council, emphasized that Iran’s actions signified more than just a military response. He described them as a declaration of a strategic doctrine, underscoring Iran’s commitment to defend its interests and allies in the region.
