Iran’s Supreme Leader’s Funeral Offers Rare Reporting Opportunity

The Washington Post attended the funeral procession for Ali Khamenei, a chance to report from Iran despite restrictions. This opportunity emerged after an invitation from the Iranian government. It was The Post’s first on-ground reporting in Iran since the war started.

In a carefully organized funeral, crowds filled the streets of Tehran to mourn the late leader. Khamenei was assassinated in the opening phase of U.S.-Israeli airstrikes in February.

Many of Iran’s political figures participated in the event. However, Mojtaba Khamenei, son and successor of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was not present.
