Argentina has pulled off a remarkable victory in the World Cup, defeating Egypt 3-2 after being down by two goals with only 11 minutes left in regulation time. Lionel Messi continued his impressive performance, scoring his eighth goal of the tournament. The win secured Argentina’s spot in the quarterfinals, where they will face either Switzerland or Colombia on Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri.
Messi was emotionally moved after the final whistle as he achieved his 21st World Cup goal, extending his record. His equalizing goal in the 83rd minute set the stage for Enzo Fernandez to score the winning goal in stoppage time. The comeback started with a goal from Cristian Romero in the 79th minute.
“This is a phenomenal group that never gives up,” Fernandez said. “Four years have passed since Qatar, and we’ve come to enjoy another World Cup—and we want to win it again. That’s what we’re aiming for.”
Argentina faced an early 2-0 deficit due to goals from Egypt’s Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico. Messi had missed a penalty kick in the first half and later hit the post when the score was 1-0. Despite these setbacks, the team pushed forward, showcasing their determination to win.
Argentina is aiming to be the first team to secure back-to-back World Cup titles since Brazil achieved this in 1958 and 1962. Coach Lionel Scaloni expressed his emotions, saying, “I’m so emotional. What a group of players, brother.”
During the match, Egypt’s lead was established early when Ibrahim scored after connecting with Marwan Attia’s cross. Argentina received a penalty opportunity shortly after when Haissem Hassan fouled Nicolas Tagliafico, but Messi’s attempt was saved by Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. Messi has now missed four of eight penalties at World Cups.
After Messi’s near miss, Shobeir continued his strong performance with another save against Julian Alvarez. Although Egypt thought they had scored again in the second half, a foul ruled the goal out, leaving them frustrated. However, Zico eventually did find the net again, but Argentina’s rally proved too strong.
