Iran has declared it has additional strategies ready if the U.S. resumes strikes. Despite signs of progress towards a peace agreement, the possibility of renewed conflict looms large. President Donald Trump mentioned halting a U.S. attack on Iran after regional leaders encouraged him by suggesting a deal was near to end the long-standing Middle East conflict.
Iran reported that Pakistan, acting as a mediator, presented a new peace proposal to the U.S. negotiators. Trump later informed reporters he was close to authorizing attacks but paused to allow negotiations to proceed.
If hostilities resume, it would disrupt the fragile truce maintained since early April. However, minor exchanges have occurred during this ceasefire. Trump previously noted the ceasefire was tenuous, following U.S. actions against Iran’s provocations, such as missile and drone attacks as U.S. warships moved through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran continues to control the Strait, a crucial maritime route where much of the world’s oil and gas passes. Only approved ships are allowed, negatively impacting global shipping and fuel prices. The prolonged conflict and Iran’s steadfastness have affected the Trump administration’s popularity, creating pressure before the November elections.
Recent data showed two Chinese oil tankers used the Strait, reported by Reuters, while Vice President JD Vance stated ongoing discussions seemed promising, despite uncertainty in the negotiating stance. Vance affirmed the U.S. remains ready to renew military actions.
Trump described Iran as eager for a deal but noted discrepancies between the negotiations and the proposed terms. He continues threatening military responses while acknowledging negotiation developments.
“With lessons learned and knowledge we gained, return to war will feature many more surprises,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Iran’s readiness to counter any aggression was highlighted, including a new proposal recognizing Iran’s uranium enrichment rights, as shared by Kazem Gharibabadi, a senior diplomat. The proposal suggests the U.S. end its blockade of Iranian ports, an action not lifted during the ceasefire.
The proposal entails the U.S. compensating Iran for damage from strikes and ending support for Israeli actions against Hezbollah. Currently, Trump rejects these proposals, emphasizing preventing Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Iran insists its nuclear program is for civilian use, though experts indicate its uranium is enriched beyond non-military needs.
