Isaias Impacts Southeast While Crime Rises Amid Chaos
Isaias Causes Damage Across the Southeast
Severe storm damage has swept across the Southeast as Isaias battered the region, leaving over 438,000 residents without power, particularly in Florida. In Mobile, Alabama, officials verified a storm-related fatality, highlighting the hazards faced during the cleanup process. Fox Weather’s Michael Estime released a report detailing these cleanup challenges. In Rosemary Beach, resident Kristin Scheurer reported significant local flooding and downed power lines due to the storm’s severity.
Crime and Exploitation in Florida
As a consequence of Hurricane Isaias’s chaos, law enforcement in Florida apprehended at least three individuals on charges related to theft and looting. Dustin Kelley, aged 30, and Amanda Carr, 29, were arrested for allegedly exploiting the hurricane’s aftermath to steal a car in Escambia County. Authorities revealed that the duo approached a woman claiming they were working in the hurricane’s wake, requesting to charge their phone inside her vehicle. When the woman exited the car, Kelley and Carr drove off, stealing the vehicle. A deputy, situated nearby, pursued and eventually detained them after a minor collision.
Charges and Arrests
Dustin Kelley faces multiple charges, including larceny, police evasion, and marijuana possession, while Amanda Carr is charged with larceny. The Escambia County Sheriff, Chip Simmons, emphasized their commitment to addressing such crimes with full force to maintain order.
Additional Incidents
In another incident, Van Gary Spikes Jr. attempted to break into a 24-hour store by smashing a window while the power was out. The sheriff’s office public information officer identified Spikes Jr. to Fox News Digital. Thanks to prompt action from a nearby deputy, his burglary attempt was thwarted, resulting in his arrest. Spikes Jr. faces charges including possession of burglary tools, wearing a mask during a felony, attempted burglary, loitering, prowling, and criminal mischief.
