Israel’s New Initiative to Foster Christian Relations
In an announcement praised by numerous Christian leaders, Israel’s government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has established a new envoy position focused on enhancing relations with the Christian world. This strategic move signifies Israel’s intent to foster smoother interactions with Christian communities globally.
Ambassador George Deek: Role and Mission
George Deek, appointed as Israel’s first envoy to the Christian world, highlighted the importance of this role during an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital in Jerusalem. He emphasized the decline of Christian populations in the Middle East, noting that they have dropped from 20% to less than 2% in recent years. Deek stressed the need to bridge gaps by sharing a more comprehensive narrative of Israel.
“My hope is to also be able to build strong bridges between the State of Israel and Christian leaders… by telling a fuller story of the State of Israel, which I think is missed in most of the narratives we hear today in the world,” Deek stated.
Growth and Diversity of Christian Population in Israel
Data from Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics reveals that as of December 2025, the Christian population in Israel stands at approximately 184,200, comprising 1.9% of the total population. This segment has seen a 0.7% increase over the previous year.
Deek previously served as Israel’s ambassador to Azerbaijan before assuming his current role. He noted that many people recognize Israel mainly through its Jewish identity, overlooking the rich diversity within Israeli society.
Factors Influencing the Appointment
The Foreign Ministry’s appointment of Deek was motivated by three factors:
- The connection between Christians and Israel as the birthplace of Christianity.
- The historical bonds reflected in shared values between Christians and Jews, including democracy and freedom.
- Israel’s commitment to maintaining relationships with diverse religious groups.
Dr. Jürgen Bühler, President of the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem (ICEJ), affirmed Israel’s dedication to Christian-Jewish relations, especially amidst rising antisemitism.
Recent Challenges and Commitments
Although Israel’s Christian community is thriving, Deek acknowledged isolated incidents targeting Christian symbols. He condemned these attacks, stating they violate values of tolerance and acceptance, fundamental to Israel. Actions taken against perpetrators demonstrate Israel’s serious stance on maintaining religious harmony.
The region’s antisemitic incidents, notably after the Hamas-led massacre on October 7, have intensified concerns. Deek highlighted that hate targeting Jews often extends to other minorities, historically and currently.
Deek’s Vision
Deek sees the role as a personal mission to invite Christians to Israel, encouraging them to connect with biblical sites and values. He aims for these visits to deepen understanding and appreciation for shared historical roots under Israel’s protection.
