Political Turmoil in Israel
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces significant political pressure as his governing coalition risks collapse. Netanyahu’s key ultra-Orthodox coalition partners are lobbying for the parliament to be dissolved, potentially triggering new national elections as early as September.
The situation intensified following Netanyahu’s announcement that he would not immediately advance legislation to exempt ultra-Orthodox Jewish Israelis from mandatory military service. He suggested postponing such measures until after new elections, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. This has led to a public statement from Degel HaTorah, an ultra-Orthodox faction within Netanyahu’s coalition, expressing their loss of trust and demanding the parliament’s dissolution.
Military Draft Debates
Exempting ultra-Orthodox Jews from military service has been a contentious issue in Israel. While most Jewish Israelis are required to serve, historically young ultra-Orthodox individuals are permitted to focus on religious studies instead. However, the ongoing Gaza conflict and Israel’s need for additional soldiers have increased political pressure for their participation.
In response to a Supreme Court ruling last year, Netanyahu’s ultra-Orthodox allies have repeatedly urged him to enact legislation protecting their exemption from the draft.
Political Landscape and Elections
The call for dissolving parliament is set for a vote next week. If parliament is disbanded, elections would take place within three months, ahead of the legal deadline on October 27. Naftali Bennett, a former right-wing prime minister, and Yair Lapid, a centrist opposition leader, are leading the charge against Netanyahu in the upcoming polls.
During this interim period, Netanyahu will remain acting prime minister as he seeks another term. The evolving political landscape in Israel remains complex and closely watched.
