Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have claimed the lives of at least nine Palestinians, according to reports from local hospitals. This comes at a time when global attention is largely focused on the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
According to Shifa Hospital, which has received the bodies, the strikes in Gaza City were conducted in at least four separate locations. Among the victims were two women and two children. Video footage reveals significant damage to what appears to be a residential building, with a large hole in an upper floor and belongings scattered by the blast.
Palestinians gathered for a funeral in Gaza City to mourn the relatives lost in the overnight airstrikes. One resident, Walid Shbeir, whose nephew was among those killed, expressed despair, stating, “They say the war has stopped, but the war has not stopped.” He emphasized the ongoing nature of violence, saying, “Every night there is killing, and we have martyrs.”
The Israeli military has not yet commented on these latest strikes. This recent violence follows the killing of Hamas’ top military leader by Israel just last week, which came two weeks after the strike on his predecessor.
Since an October ceasefire deal attempted to put an end to a prolonged two-year war between Israel and Hamas, incidents of violence have persisted. Despite the ceasefire, over 936 Palestinians have died following Israeli actions in the region. Israeli forces have been noted for conducting airstrikes and shooting at Palestinians near military zones.
The Gaza Health Ministry, which operates under the Hamas leadership, reported the latest figures. Both UN agencies and independent experts generally find this ministry reliable. However, differentiating between civilian and militant casualties remains unreported. In addition to these strikes, militants have been involved in attacks against Israeli troops. Israel maintains that its military responses are directed at ceasefire violations or threats to their forces.
Since the ceasefire, four Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza. The Israeli offensive was initially launched in response to an attack by Hamas in October 2023, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, with 251 taken hostage.
