Jackson Lewandowski’s Promising Football Journey
As a junior defensive end at Lake Zurich, Jackson Lewandowski looks every bit the part. Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 235 pounds, Lewandowski has the physique of a prototypical football player. His father, Joe, was an offensive lineman in the Arena League and currently assists the Bears. Lewandowski’s passion for football began early, influenced by playing catch with his dad and watching games whenever possible.
Emerging Talent and College Attention
Last season, Lewandowski played in Lake Zurich’s narrow 24-21 loss to Nazareth in the Class 6A quarterfinals. Since then, college coaches have shown interest, with Lewandowski attending various showcase camps to highlight his strengths. Offers from Toledo and Miami of Ohio have come forward, and his speed is a standout attribute.
“I think my speed sets me apart,” he explained. “It’s one of my best assets for recruiting.”
Transition to Defensive End
Last season, Lewandowski transitioned from the offensive line to defensive end, marking his first year as a varsity player in this role. He delivered an impressive performance with five sacks and 27 tackles, including eight for a loss. Senior linebacker Brock Rubicz praised him as a versatile player, aiding the team’s strategy against opponents with key offensive players.
Challenges and Growth
Lewandowski faced challenges in the opening game against Fremd, where he struggled against Northwestern recruit Owen Jakubczak. Despite a tough match, he considered it a valuable learning experience. The following week, he recorded his first varsity sack in a 33-0 win over Antioch, a moment that significantly impacted the game.
Offensive Contributions and Coaching Changes
In addition to his defensive contributions, Lewandowski played as a tight end and could take on a more significant role this season. His speed makes him a valuable asset in both blocking and route running. Last season’s tight ends coach, Dragan Teonic, is now the head coach, succeeding Ron Planz. Teonic emphasizes the toughness of Lake Zurich’s players and sees the team as strong contenders.
Future Prospects
With no returning offensive starters, the Bears must rebuild offensively, but the defense remains solid with key players like Rubicz and Arturo Zarinana. Teonic commended Lewandowski’s explosive skills and potential, anticipating his growth in the sport. His father, Joe Lewandowski, is optimistic about his son’s football IQ and physical development, expecting a bright future in college football.
