Jaclyn Smith, renowned for her role as Kelly Garrett in the hit TV series ‘Charlie’s Angels’, has opened up about her personal journey in her memoir, ‘I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie’. The actress, now 80, reflects on her life with her fourth husband, Dr. Brad Allen, sharing insights into living separately for 17 out of their 35 years together.
Meeting Brad Allen
Smith first met Allen in 1991 during her father’s heart surgery, where he was one of the doctors attending to her father. Two years afterward, Allen accepted a position in Chicago at the University of Illinois, resulting in the couple living in different cities for 17 years. Despite the physical distance, their relationship flourished, culminating in marriage in 1997.
Regarding her marriage to Allen, Smith emphasizes the importance of family in making lasting decisions. With two children at the time they met, Smith felt it necessary for any decision about marriage to be a collective one involving her family.
Marriage and Family
Smith and Allen finally tied the knot after seven years of knowing each other. By then, they had an in-depth understanding of each other’s families, priorities, and mutual life expectations. These shared values provided a foundation for their relationship.
Allen later joined Smith in Los Angeles in 2009, closing the distance for good. He supported her through various challenges, including her breast cancer diagnosis in 2002, after which Smith underwent successful treatments, including a lumpectomy and radiation.
Smith believes sustaining a marriage involves commitment beyond being in love. She asserts that day-to-day life is essential for a fulfilling partnership.
Reflections on Past Marriages
Before finding lasting love with Allen, Smith had been married three times. Her union with Roger Davis ended after discovering infidelity. Similarly, her marriage to Dennis Cole dissolved when she uncovered his relationship with another woman.
Smith’s third marriage to cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond faced challenges due to his struggles with substance abuse. Determined to prioritize her children’s well-being, Smith ended the marriage.
In her memoir, Smith candidly discusses the lessons learned from each experience, expressing how these trials strengthened her character.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Reflecting on her career, Smith explains she had no fixed plan and responded to opportunities as they arose. While she speculates on what might have been if she had accepted offers like the James Bond movie, she is content with her path.
Through her memoir, Smith reveals the strengths she’s discovered in herself despite heartbreak and challenges. She credits her parents for grounding her, stating she put her family first, focusing fiercely on her children’s happiness and safety.
