Jahmyr Gibbs Signs Lucrative Contract, Setting New Benchmark for NFL Running Backs

Recently, NFL running backs have secured impressive contracts. Jahmyr Gibbs of the Detroit Lions is the latest to benefit, signing a three-year deal for $67.5 million, with $51.5 million guaranteed. Agent Todd France shared the news on Instagram.

With this contract, Gibbs breaks records, averaging $22.5 million annually, the highest for any NFL running back. This reflects his exceptional ability to transform the running back position in Detroit, reminiscent of Barry Sanders in the 1990s.

“Gibbs has emerged as a unique playmaker, scoring 39 rushing touchdowns and 10 receiving touchdowns over three seasons. He led the NFL with 20 touchdowns from scrimmage in 2024.”

This announcement followed Jonathan Taylor’s two-year extension with the Indianapolis Colts, averaging $22 million annually. Just days before, Bijan Robinson signed with the Atlanta Falcons for $22.25 million per year.

The deals surpass Saquon Barkley’s previous position-leading contract of $20.6 million annually. This trend reveals the increasing value of top-tier NFL running backs.

For the Lions, retaining talent through lucrative contracts is a familiar approach. Alongside Gibbs, they have renewed deals with several key players, including Aidan Hutchinson, Jack Campbell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and others.

These investments have yielded results. Detroit won the NFC North in 2023, achieving a 15-game winning season and advancing in the playoffs. Yet, a Super Bowl appearance remains elusive.

Despite the $800 million in total commitments with these deals, a Super Bowl victory is the ultimate goal for Dan Campbell’s team. Continued success will require translating promising drafts into championship wins.
