Jamal Crawford’s Secret Catchphrase
Jamal Crawford, an NBA veteran with a 20-year career, is now making waves as a color commentator for NBC Sports. While calling playoff games alongside broadcast partners Mike Tirico and Reggie Miller, Crawford is infusing his commentary with a secret catchphrase unknown even to his colleagues.
“You know what? I have one, and during these playoffs you will hear it,” Crawford revealed in an NBC News interview. “You’re the first person I’m telling I have one. Not even Mike and Reggie know this. When you hear it, you’ll know. I’ll give you a little hint: You’re going to hear something about a court.”
Although audiences may not immediately identify Crawford’s catchphrase, his enthusiasm for broadcasting is unmistakable. After playing for nine NBA teams, Crawford began his media career in 2021 with NBA League Pass.
Joining NBC Sports
In 2022, Crawford joined TNT as a studio analyst, later calling select games for MSG Network in 2024 during the New York Knicks’ local broadcast. With the NBA’s return to NBC, Crawford quickly became a lead analyst, building instant rapport with Tirico and Miller.
“Reggie is a legend. I still learn and steal from him. Mike is the ultimate point guard. He sets everybody else up first, but he knows when to do his filay layup,” Crawford said. “It’s an honor to sit with those guys, but we have a good crew all over the place.”
Beyond Broadcasting

Crawford’s involvement with basketball extends beyond broadcasting. He narrates “Chasing History,” an NBA-produced digital documentary, recording voice-overs throughout the playoffs. He also coaches AAU and assists college and professional players during the offseason.
“To be this close to the game is incredible,” said Crawford. “This brings a different connection. This, for me, is like what I heard in my childhood when Marv Albert was on a call, or Bob Costas, or Ahmad Rashad. I take such pride in it.”
Looking Forward
Crawford often channels his excitement for basketball, noting that he sometimes needs to tone it down during broadcasts due to his genuine love for the sport.
“I’m coming straight from like, ‘Yo, I’m a fan. We are at the bar, I’m having my Sprite lemonade.’ I’m truly a fan of the game in the purest, truest sense.”
As the playoffs progress, Crawford’s focus will shift to the Western Conference finals, aired on NBC. He expresses curiosity about the electrifying atmosphere of Madison Square Garden should the Knicks clinch a Finals spot. Having played there from 2004 to 2009, when they didn’t reach the playoffs, Crawford envisions a thrilling scene for the Knicks’ fans.
“Seeing the Knicks reach the Finals would be crazy. I know that fan base. They made it feel like the playoffs when we were terrible when I played there every single night. So I couldn’t imagine what Finals is like in New York.”
