Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville criticized House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for meeting with Jared Kushner, special envoy to President Trump. Carville expressed discontent, noting that Democrats of all views agree on avoiding meetings with Trump’s inner circle. This criticism followed reports of Jeffries discussing housing, immigration, and living costs with Kushner, as reported by The New York Times.
Carville explained to Jeffries, “Different Democrats have various stances on Medicare for all and policing, but there’s one thing we all agree on: we don’t meet with Trump’s people.” Despite the meeting’s seemingly positive intentions, Carville stressed that Democrats should not reach across party lines in this manner.
Carville, known for his candid style, stated, “We believe one thing above all. They are a pack of felons and traitors. You do not meet with them.” He suggested that Democrats should investigate Kushner’s dealings instead of meeting with him.
Carville suggested, “We need to bring Kushner before a committee and uncover any secret dealings.” He added, “We’re not going to be nice to these people.” Carville criticized the Trump administration for making questionable deals, implying they lacked competence.
The strategist concluded by advising Jeffries not to meet with individuals associated with Trump. Following the backlash from the meeting, Jason Mudd, CEO of Axia, commented on Jeffries’ predicament, stating that it was less about meeting Kushner and more about the meeting’s disclosure.
Mudd remarked, “The issue isn’t the meeting itself, but how it was handled.” He emphasized that politicians need to compromise while being transparent with their constituents. Mudd suggested that Jeffries should clearly communicate the meeting’s details to rebuild trust.
Mudd advised, “Jeffries should take control of the narrative. Explain the meeting’s purpose and outcomes in his own words.” He warned against silence, which could imply guilt, urging Jeffries to present his side of the story.
