Jarren Cooley, a senior at Wauconda, is now a standout football player, wearing his No. 2 jersey with pride. However, 15 months ago, he did not play football; he was focused on sprinting. His transition from sprinting to football was swift and driven by his passion. Cooley shared, “After I started playing, I couldn’t stop. It didn’t matter how tired I was, I wanted to play.” His rapid development into a strong starter for the undefeated Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0) before their upcoming Northern Lake County Conference game against Round Lake is noteworthy. Cooley expressed his satisfaction, saying, “It goes together with me like peanut butter and jelly.”
Cooley’s journey into football began during his sophomore year. He was introduced to the sport in Wauconda coach Chris Prostka’s physical education class. Football was a natural topic of conversation, and Cooley considered joining the team then. By spring, he was convinced to try the sport. Reflecting on his experience, Cooley credits coach Prostka for encouraging him and recognizing his athletic potential. Prostka saw an opportunity and guided Cooley to realize his capabilities. Cooley acknowledged Prostka’s push, stating, “He knew that I had athletic ability, but he said that he would push me.”
For coach Prostka, recruiting Cooley was an easy decision. Prostka appreciated Cooley’s dedication and determination. “As a junior, we were deciding where best to use him,” Prostka said. “He doesn’t do things halfway, and if he knows that you’ll give everything you have, he’ll give everything he has in return.” Cooley’s strong commitment to football led to rapid improvements. Senior lineman Jayden Sanders noted significant changes, “Seeing him go from not knowing the plays last year to making big plays now is incredible. He learned fast and is achieving success.”
Last season, Cooley began getting more offensive snaps, understanding the game’s complexities. As a starting cornerback this season, his technical skills and agility fit the role well. Cooley commented on playing cornerback, “You have to stay levelheaded and live for the next play.” During Wauconda’s 48-14 win over Grayslake North, Cooley made a pivotal interception, helping shift the game’s momentum. Cooley’s interception at a crucial moment put Wauconda in a position to score more effectively.
Coach Prostka praised Cooley’s dedication in reviewing game films, noting his substantial preparation. Cooley’s preparation resulted in successful execution during games. He recalled delivering on his coach’s challenge with a game-changing play, saying, “‘There’s your pick,’ I said after executing my assignment perfectly.”
Cooley’s defensive abilities include not only interceptions but also impactful tackles. He demonstrated speed and control in a recent game by stopping a receiver immediately after the catch. Cooley explained, “Even if you catch it, I’m not going to let you go far.” His development in tackling shows growth in his skills over the past year. Beyond the field, Cooley values his team as an extended family. Cooley shared, “Outside my house, these guys are my family.” He stays humble and focuses on improving every day while appreciating the experience of playing football with teammates.
