WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert clarified that NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White cannot play in the WNBA as they are identified as men. This statement was in response to a congressional inquiry. Engelbert’s letter, dated October 16, specifically stated that only women can play in the WNBA, which aligns with the league’s collective bargaining agreement.
A recent inquiry from Congressman Marlin Stutzman and other Republicans questioned the eligibility criteria of the WNBA. They pointed to Freedom and White’s declaration to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft as identifying women. Englebert’s response did not provide a definition for ‘women’ beyond noting that Freedom and White were men.
Freedom commented that Engelbert’s answer left crucial questions on transgender eligibility unresolved. He questioned the authority and standards used by the WNBA in determining who qualifies to compete, suggesting that the league should clarify its policies clearly.
The issue revolves around differing views on the definition of womanhood and participation in women’s sports leagues. Some, like Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham, have supported limiting participation to biological females. Others within the league advocate for broader inclusion of transgender athletes.
WNBA’s task force has been engaged with these topics among others related to online abuse towards players. Although the league remains in discussion, Engelbert’s letter did not detail a comprehensive policy change. The response to players’ confrontations and rule enforcement also appeared in the lawmakers’ inquiry.
The issue has continued dialogue about the intersection of sports, gender identity, and eligibility frameworks. Freedom has voiced his intentions to prompt the league into making explicit rules regarding eligibility based on biological sex by maintaining his place in the narrative. The future leadership change in WNBA may hold key implications for these ongoing discussions.
