However, he noted that such grand gestures are more typical in winter leagues in Mexico and Yan’s home country, the Dominican Republic. Despite this, he confessed, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy jump ten feet in the air.”

Yan’s celebration does raise some concerns about potential injury risks. Balester pointed out, “If I was the team, I would be a little nervous about him blowing out his knee jumping up like that.” He emphasized that while pitching itself carries some risks, the act of jumping and landing in such a manner could be especially harmful. Balester expressed surprise at Yan’s persistence in performing the celebration after making it to the Majors. He admitted, “I said I don’t know when this guy’s getting into the big leagues, but if he gets up there, I guarantee you he’s not going to do it.” Yet, Yan has continued his signature move, defying expectations.

The reaction among hitters might not be friendly when faced with such a bold celebration. Balester recalled, “I know the game is a little bit different now; guys are a little bit more obviously pimping home runs.” Pitchers and hitters alike are competitive, and a dramatic celebration like Yan’s might compel rival players to step up their performance, potentially using it as motivation.

Balester suggested that Yan’s approach could work in his favor over time. “I think it’s going to play in his favor, to be honest,” he stated. The celebration might drive opponents to try too hard to retaliate, ultimately working to Yan’s advantage. “At some point, that’s going to kind of falter.” Yan’s bold celebration brings a new dynamic to the game, potentially serving as both a motivational tool and a unique psychological strategy.
