Wisconsin Primary Poses Challenge for Establishment Democrats
The Democratic primary in Wisconsin is attracting significant attention as Francesca Hong, backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), challenges establishment candidates. Former Governor Scott Walker and host Harris Faulkner have analyzed Hong’s policies, which include some controversial positions.
Hong, who posted on social media that America should be an ‘abundance of opportunity’ rather than ‘an abundance of suffering,’ is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor. Her social media presence has often been critical of American institutions, drawing scrutiny from various quarters.
“Cancel Thanksgiving. Should have done this in 1621.”
This quote is from a now-deleted post by Hong, criticizing the historical celebration of Thanksgiving due to its colonial legacy. Despite deleting some posts, Hong’s candidacy represents a growing trend of socialists aiming for state and federal positions.
In a 2019 post, Hong expressed discomfort in predominantly White settings, mentioning an incident at a Culver’s restaurant that triggered anxiety. Additionally, she has been vocal against police practices, particularly after the 2020 shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, advocating for police abolition. Her stance stands in stark contrast to the establishment’s approach to law enforcement issues.
Hong’s team communicated that her views on police and prison abolition align with broader, aspirational goals similar to eliminating poverty. Despite this, she acknowledged the governor’s limited power over defunding police.
As her primary draws near, Hong remains focused on voter concerns, downplaying past social media controversies. She aims to redirect attention to issues she believes are important to the electorate.
