Jill Biden Reflects on Joe’s 2024 Reelection Bid and Health Challenges
Jill Biden recently discussed her support for former President Joe Biden’s presidential reelection bid in 2024, despite a challenging debate performance that coincided with health concerns. Speaking on TODAY, she shared insights from her book, “View From the West Wing: A Memoir,” where she reflects on the events following a crucial debate against Donald Trump in June 2024, which led to Joe Biden withdrawing from the race.
When asked by Craig Melvin if she would make the same decision to support Joe’s candidacy, Jill Biden expressed her mixed feelings. “As I look back, would I want to put Joe through the hurt and the pain that we felt during that time? Never,” she said. “It had to be his decision. It had to be his decision alone because he had to live with that decision the rest of his life.”
During an event shortly after the debate, Jill Biden remarked that her husband’s performance was “great” and that he “answered every question.” However, concerns arose regarding his cognitive abilities following the debate. Speaking on TODAY, Jill described her emotional turmoil during that period, stating, “My mind is racing. What do I say to him? What do I say to him?” She emphasized her role as a supportive spouse, refraining from public criticism despite acknowledging the challenges they faced.
The debate in Atlanta on June 27, 2024, also featured Donald Trump. Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who succeeded Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee, mentioned in her 2025 memoir “107 Days” that the decision for Biden to exit the race was not based on his mental capacity. She wrote, “‘It’s Joe and Jill’s decision.’ We all said that, like a mantra, as if we’d all been hypnotized.” The title referenced the timeline between Biden’s withdrawal and the 2024 election.
Joe Biden has faced allegations regarding his cognitive and memory abilities. In May 2026, he sued the Justice Department to prevent the release of private conversations related to his 2017 memoir. A report by former special counsel Robert Hur noted memory issues, countered by the White House, with audio leaks confirming some lapses.
In May 2025, journalists Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson published “Original Sin,” which scrutinized Biden’s mental fitness and referenced an incident where he did not recognize George Clooney. Joe Biden countered the claims on ABC’s “The View,” stating, “They are wrong. There’s nothing to sustain that.”
Joe Biden revealed his diagnosis with prostate cancer in 2025, and Jill Biden confirmed that it has since metastasized to his bones. “He’s doing OK,” she shared, acknowledging the long-term implications. “I think if he had just been diagnosed with prostate cancer, that’s one thing because that can be cured, but the fact that it metastasized to his bones, that makes it a whole different story. And so I think Joe will live with cancer till the rest of his life.”
