Jerome Powell Warns Against Politicizing the Fed
U.S. Federal Reserve Governor Jerome Powell warned about the dangers of a politicized Federal Reserve and highlighted the importance of defending democratic institutions. These comments marked his first public statement since concluding his eight-year tenure as head of the central bank.
Powell emphasized that democratic institutions require significant time, effort, and patience to establish but can be quickly dismantled. These remarks were part of his speech as he accepted the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, presented by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. Powell stressed the need to preserve the benefits of these institutions while also working to enhance them. He identified the Fed, courts, and universities as critical to the country’s success and global standing.
He noted that, like many other institutions, the Fed has undergone considerable stress. This includes President Donald Trump’s attempts to dismiss Fed Governor Lisa Cook, calls for Powell’s own resignation, and a criminal investigation concerning him.
Powell’s tenure as chair ended on May 15, succeeded by Kevin Warsh, who took office on May 22. Despite this, Powell chose to remain a Fed governor, citing ongoing threats to the Fed’s independence. This decision prevents Trump from appointing another member to the Fed board for the time being.

According to Powell, the Fed’s structure is designed to enable monetary policy decisions free from political influence. He noted that protections around this independence have served the public well and have been respected by administrations from both parties. If any administration could remove Fed officials due to policy disagreements, it would undermine public trust in the central bank’s impartiality and decision-making for the benefit of all Americans.
The foundation recognized Powell for safeguarding one of the country’s key apolitical institutions and demonstrating significant courage amidst ongoing personal and professional challenges.
This year, the award was also given to the citizens of Minneapolis and St. Paul in recognition of their response to increased immigration enforcement in the Twin Cities area. This response included public protests and monitoring of government activities related to enforcement.
