On Wednesday night, Jimmy Kimmel criticized CBS News for firing longtime ’60 Minutes’ correspondent Scott Pelley. The decision followed a heated exchange between Pelley and the show’s new executive producer, Nick Bilton.
During his monologue on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, Kimmel accused CBS of ousting Pelley due to his commitment to the program’s standards. Kimmel labeled CBS as sympathetic to certain political figures, suggesting Pelley’s dismissal occurred because he defended journalistic integrity on a program known for its quality reporting for over five decades.
According to Kimmel, Pelley’s frustration was tied to recent dismissals at ’60 Minutes,’ including correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi, Cecilia Vega, and executive producer Tanya Simon. CBS replaced Simon with Nick Bilton, a new addition lacking experience in television news.
Pelley confronted CBS leadership, expressing dissatisfaction with what he viewed as a decline in values. Kimmel referenced this confrontation, noting that Pelley’s remarks about the network’s leadership likely contributed to his dismissal.
Kimmel also joked about the future of CBS’s news programming, suggesting it might align more with the network’s new late-night strategy. He mentioned President Donald Trump’s reaction to the firing, highlighting Trump’s negative comments about Pelley during an interview.
Bilton described Pelley’s actions during their meeting as an ‘ambush,’ according to a termination notice seen by the Associated Press. CBS has yet to issue an official statement regarding the circumstances of Pelley’s firing.
In his post-firing statement, Pelley criticized the direction ’60 Minutes’ was taking under new leadership, accusing management of compromising the program’s core values and pressuring him to incorporate bias into reporting.
The Washington Post reported that Weiss, the CBS News editor-in-chief, spoke of broken trust and the network’s attempts to ‘find a way back.’ Pelley denied any such efforts were proposed.
Fox News Digital attempted to contact the Trump administration but did not receive a comment.
