Joanna Gaines, known for her role in the hit series “Fixer Upper,” experienced significant success after knocking on every door. However, there came a time when she and her husband, Chip Gaines, decided to step back from the relentless cycle of fame and work pressure. Despite their representatives urging them to keep going, the couple chose to prioritize their well-being.
During her appearance on the “Joy 101 with Hoda Kotb” podcast, Joanna explained that she reached a point of “soul weariness.” This term encapsulates the feeling of living without intentionality, where life feels monotonous and unfulfilling. Joanna expressed, “When you start realizing you’re living on a thing that’s now… the intentionality is gone, and you’re just showing up… that doesn’t feel fulfilling.”
The Gaines decision to pause work marked a transformative moment. Joanna stated, “Stopping in that moment was basically us saying… ‘What’s worth it is, like are we healthy? Are we good? Is our family good?’ That’s the most important thing.”
The “Fixer Upper” series made Joanna and Chip household names in home renovation. Despite the series’ success, they realized that continuing at such a fast pace was unsustainable. In September 2017, they announced the end of the show after five seasons. Joanna explained how their lack of vision made them reconsider their priorities. She shared the couple’s decision to take a summer break to gain clarity about their goals.
However, this decision had consequences. Joanna acknowledged that stepping away meant placing pressure on their team, causing disappointment. Despite the costs of their break, it allowed them to reassess their reasons for building their business.
During this time, Joanna faced burnout, coupled with the emotional impact of their son leaving for college. She noted how burnout influenced her daily life, leading her to wish for events that would force her to take a break.
Physical exhaustion, Joanna explained, is manageable. However, the deeper exhaustion related to the soul is more concerning. She described this as a “holy fear” that she learned not to ignore.
Dating back to their origins in Waco, Texas, Joanna and Chip’s Magnolia businesses flourished along with their television fame. They ended “Fixer Upper” in 2018 and later launched Magnolia Network, which replaced DIY Network in 2022.
The magnolia empire includes Magnolia Market at the Silos, Silos Baking Co., Magnolia Press Coffee Co., and Magnolia Table. Additionally, Joanna publishes “Magnolia Journal” and has a lifestyle book series. The couple’s home furniture collection is known as Magnolia Home, and Joanna has a collection with Target called Hearth & Hand with Magnolia.
In 2023, Chip and Joanna opened Hotel 1928, after renovating a historic building in partnership with AJ Capital. They also offer Magnolia vacation rentals in Waco.
