USC fans faced scrutiny for their lack of attendance at the Trojans’ home opener against San Jose State. With high temperatures affecting turnout, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum saw fewer spectators than expected. Head coach Lincoln Riley, however, dismissed concerns over attendance, calling them a “false narrative” and expressing confidence in fan support.
Riley commented on the situation, emphasizing that many criticisms stem from individuals unfamiliar with USC’s program. He noted a trend of increasing attendance in his tenure, with home-game performances regularly drawing significant crowds. Riley anticipates this trend continuing, pointing to recent games as evidence.
“I think that comes from a lot of people who don’t follow our program, most of those who have never stepped foot in the Coliseum,”Riley remarked, according to the LA Times.
Despite the initial concerns, the situation appeared to improve significantly at the Trojans’ recent game against Louisiana-Lafayette. The stands were filled, reflecting a strong turnout as USC secured another victory, advancing to a 3-0 record. This was a reassuring sign for Riley, dispelling doubts about fan engagement.
However, maintaining unity among fans posed challenges. Although fans arrived to support their team, tensions occasionally flared. At a recent match, a disagreement between fans led to a brief altercation involving a fan with a bedazzled hat. The conflict disrupted the game’s atmosphere temporarily, yet fans continued to rally behind their team.
The incident raised questions about the influence of factors like alcohol on fan behavior. Nonetheless, USC supporters did come together to bolster the Trojans in what was anticipated to be a straightforward victory. Sean Joseph reported this for OutKick.
