Former Senator John E. Sununu secured the GOP Senate nomination in New Hampshire, a critical swing state, on Tuesday. This race could decide if Republicans retain control of the Senate in the midterm elections. Sununu overcame former Senator Scott Brown, reported by the Associated Press, to potentially replace retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen. Shaheen holds the distinction of being the first woman in U.S. history elected as both governor and senator.
Republicans have not won a Senate race in New Hampshire in 16 years. They see the Democrat-held seat as a prime opportunity to maintain a slim majority in the upcoming elections. Sununu will now compete in the general election against either four-term Representative Chris Pappas or socialist scientist Karishma Manzur, both vying for the Democratic nomination.
“Sununu, son of former Governor John H. Sununu and brother to former Governor Chris Sununu, served as a congressman and senator before. He seeks to return to the Senate,” reports Fox News Digital.
In February, President Donald Trump endorsed Sununu, despite Sununu’s previous criticism of Trump’s policies, over Brown, a former ambassador during Trump’s first term. Sununu also received support from Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
Brown criticized Sununu on Fox News Digital, stating, “He’s got 70 endorsements on his website, but not the president’s. He never mentions it; he’s embarrassed by it. I’ve had the MAGA base and traditional Republicans for over a year. Johnny came lately and thinks everyone will vote for him. That’s not how it works.” Brown accused Sununu of being “beholden” to Trump, the Senate leadership, and other groups.
In contrast, Sununu told Fox News Digital, “I’ll have one job — stand up for the people of New Hampshire every single day. I don’t need to make anyone in Washington happy. It’s all about our state, our communities, our economy, and our small businesses.” Asked about Trump’s endorsement, Sununu highlighted his local endorsements and noted strong grassroots support in New Hampshire.
Although Trump plans to campaign for Republicans in the midterms, Sununu stated, “I don’t need anyone from outside New Hampshire to campaign for me. I’ve said that from the very beginning.” Sununu also opposed the Trump administration’s trade conflict with Canada, advocating for strong trading partnerships, especially given New Hampshire’s economic ties with its neighboring country.
Republicans are facing challenges such as persistent inflation, high gas prices, and the public’s dissatisfaction with the conflict involving Iran. Trump’s approval ratings are notably low as well. However, Sununu, who previously defeated Shaheen in 2002 but lost to her again in 2008, focuses on issues like affordability, reducing living costs in housing, healthcare, and energy, aiming for reform.
