Johnnie “DJ” Jones, a freshman offensive lineman for the Missouri Tigers, is recuperating following a heart transplant. Coach Eli Drinkwitz provided an encouraging update on Thursday, noting that Jones’ surgery was successful and he is on the mend.
“We are incredibly grateful for the medical team who cared for DJ and for the donor and donor family whose extraordinary gift made this possible,” Drinkwitz expressed in a social media post. The coach is in his seventh year with the Tigers.

Jones was hospitalized at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida while awaiting the surgery, Drinkwitz mentioned during a news conference on Tuesday.
The issue with Jones’ heart was initially detected during freshman intake testing over the summer. After two weeks of observation without a clear resolution, Missouri’s medical staff opted to consult experts at the Mayo Clinic.
Drinkwitz revealed that Mayo Clinic doctors identified a more serious heart condition than originally thought, leading to the recommendation for a transplant.
Doctors at the Mayo Clinic detected a much more serious heart problem, Drinkwitz said. The coaching staff was told last week that Jones needed the transplant.
The 18-year-old Jones, a graduate of Venice High School on Florida’s Gulf Coast, joined Missouri as a four-star recruit. The team, currently 4-1, is set to host Columbia on Saturday.
