Strath Haven High School Plans $76 Million Renovation with Gender-Neutral Bathrooms
Strath Haven High School in Pennsylvania is set for a major renovation, which includes building gender-neutral bathroom facilities as part of a $76 million project. These plans were revealed during a recent school board meeting, showcasing the comprehensive redesign of the school’s facilities.
The Wallingford-Swarthmore School District’s presentation highlighted their intent to introduce ‘universal toilet rooms’ on each floor of the high school. This part of the renovation will replace the current gendered restrooms with larger, universal spaces that include individual stalls and communal sink areas.
Beyond the bathrooms, the renovation project covers new science classrooms and improvements in infrastructure and academic spaces. The student newspaper, The Panther Press, noted that the new design features gender-neutral restrooms on each floor, and these will be equipped with enhanced privacy measures.
The architect leading the project, Mike Kelly from Kelly Clough Baker and Associates, explained the security benefits of the new design. The bathrooms are designed to let cameras monitor public areas while stalls remain private and secure. This aims to reduce loitering and other behavior issues.
The school district confirmed these plans to Fox News Digital, emphasizing the focus on student privacy and safety. A representative stated, ‘Each student will access a fully enclosed private toilet room, providing greater privacy than traditional school restrooms.’
The district ensured that some traditional restroom layouts will remain. The project budget, approved by the Board of School Directors, is capped at $70 million, with most funds allocated for infrastructure upgrades.
Public records of the schematic design and detailed budget information are available through the district’s official channels.
