Ossoff’s Gaining Ground
Senator Jon Ossoff is making notable strides in the early polling for the potential 2028 Democratic presidential field. His support has increased significantly, contrasting with the declining numbers for former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom. This shift suggests an evolving landscape for the Democratic contenders.
Although he has publicly stated having “zero interest” in running for president in 2028, Ossoff’s support has surged to 7%, according to new data from Morning Consult. This marks a rise from 3% in previous polls. Ossoff stands out as the only Democrat to gain traction for three consecutive polling periods. His initial support was a mere 1% in May.
Top Democratic Contenders
Kamala Harris remains at the forefront with 24% support. Gavin Newsom follows with 12%, while former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg garners 9%. Morning Consult’s survey, conducted from August 28 to 30, involved 2,203 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
The survey reveals a stable yet dynamic Democratic race. Harris has maintained consistent support over five polling waves. Meanwhile, Newsom’s figures have dropped from 19% in June. Ossoff’s rising numbers continue to attract attention.
Potential Influences on Ossoff’s Path
Patrick Casale, senior adviser to the Nevada GOP Chairman, spoke to Newsweek about potential factors influencing Ossoff’s ascent. He noted that if Democratic socialist candidates excel in the midterms, the party may lean towards Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. However, a poor performance might redirect attention towards candidates like Ossoff. Casale expressed skepticism regarding Newsom’s and Harris’ polling numbers, attributing Newsom’s challenges to California’s situation.
Ossoff’s National Attention
Ossoff’s increasing national profile has been bolstered by his recent confrontations with President Donald Trump and his administration. During an August rally, Ossoff criticized Trump, highlighting the president’s priorities and stance on the Iran war. Trump’s response was dismissive, employing personal jibes, which Ossoff later used to his advantage in media appearances.
Comparisons with Other Polls
Harris consistently leads other 2028 Democratic polls, though margins differ. A Rasmussen Reports poll showed her with 37% support, with Newsom trailing at 14%. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had 9%, while Buttigieg had 8%. Emerson College’s July poll, however, placed Buttigieg in the lead at 19%, with Newsom at 17% and Ossoff and Ocasio-Cortez at 13% each.
Republican Field Developments
Morning Consult’s poll also observed changes in the Republican field. Secretary of State Marco Rubio experienced a 7-point gain, reaching 22% support, a marked shift in the Republican race since March. Vice President JD Vance maintained a lead with 36%, though this was his lowest recorded level in these polls.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. remained stable at 8% and 5% respectively. None of the candidates have officially declared their candidacy for the 2028 race, and stances vary on taking on the presidential bid.
