Jon Stewart’s Podcast: A Conversation with NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani

Jon Stewart, known for his centrist approach, engaged in a discussion with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a Wednesday episode of his podcast, The Weekly Show. The conversation focused on the rise of Democratic socialism within the Democratic Party. Stewart remarked that Democratic socialism is now viewed as a trendy movement within the party, with new candidates emerging and energizing grassroots support.

Stewart expressed his perspective on maintaining order and security, questioning whether neighborhoods with fewer resources should have the same safety as wealthier areas. He shared his reservations about extreme policy positions such as abolishing prisons and borders.

Look, maybe I’m an old man or a s— lib or whatever they want to call me, Stewart stated. If someone says we’re going to abolish all prisons and borders, like I do go, ‘I don’t think that’s a good idea.’

Mamdani, credited with advancing Democratic socialism after his inauguration, responded to Stewart’s inquiry about any discomfort with the policies of fellow socialists.

If you have more than one socialist in a room and there isn’t disagreement, then you don’t have more than one socialist in a room, Mamdani said, emphasizing the importance of productive discussions.

Mamdani stressed the need for effective public safety without compromising justice. He mentioned efforts to reduce crime rates and plans to close Riker’s Island in favor of smaller, borough-based jails.

And yes, I am doing the work with our police department, and we have been able to deliver the lowest number of murders and shootings in recorded history, Mamdani noted, highlighting his initiatives.

Mamdani reiterated that safety should not be dependent on the neighborhood one resides in or their financial status, advocating for preventative measures against violence.

There cannot be a hierarchy of safety where you experience it more or less depending on where you live in our city, Mamdani said. We also have to do the work of investing so that we prevent violence.

The conversation highlights ongoing discussions about the balance between safety and justice in New York City and the evolving landscape of Democratic socialism within the party.
