Kacey Musgraves, the well-known country music star, faced criticism after asking her fans to donate to an immigrant children’s rights group during her “Middle of Nowhere” tour. On the opening night of her tour at the United Center in Chicago, Musgraves took a moment to explain her birthday wish. She asked concertgoers to support the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights with donations, emphasizing the organization’s efforts to provide legal aid and resources to children whose parents have been deported.
Musgraves stated, “It’s a wonderful organization, and they help give aid—legal aid—and money to children whose parents have been deported unfairly.” She clarified her stance by saying, “It’s not a political thing. It’s just, these kids need help.” Despite receiving applause and cheers from the crowd, her request led to a polarized reaction online.
Some conservative commentators criticized Musgraves’ appeal, questioning the notion of “unfair deportation.” Vince Langman commented, suggesting support for children whose parents were victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants. Other critics labeled Musgraves’ request as divisive and called for a boycott of her music.
A few social media users argued that Musgraves, who is reportedly worth $15 million, should donate her own money rather than ask fans who have already paid substantial ticket prices to contribute further. Some remarked that asking for additional money from fans who had already supported her by purchasing tickets was inappropriate.
Nonetheless, many of Musgraves’ fans defended her on social media. They praised her initiative to help children affected by immigration policies, stressing that it was about offering help where it is needed and not a political statement.
Kacey Musgraves stood by her comments on social media by uploading a post on Instagram that read, “Kinda chic when kids don’t face immigration court alone.”
The Young Center, based in Chicago, expressed gratitude towards Musgraves for her support. The organization focuses on advocating for unaccompanied and separated immigrant children, pairing volunteers with attorneys and social workers to help achieve family unity, fair proceedings, and foster the children’s best interests.
Musgraves had previously extended her support for the Young Center by selling items from her wardrobe to benefit the nonprofit. In addition, she invited three brothers from a mariachi group to open her Texas shows after their family was released from ICE custody.
As ICE enforcement reached record levels, Musgraves faced criticism from those who disagreed with her stance on immigration. The Department of Homeland Security clarified that recent detentions adhered to the law requiring custody for illegal entrants while their cases are reviewed.
Musgraves continues her North American arena tour, which runs through October, with Midland as the opening act.
