Senior outside hitter Kailey Skurka stands on the brink of a major achievement as she wraps up her four-year varsity volleyball career at Lake Central. With only seven regular-season matches and at least one postseason game remaining, the 5-foot-11 athlete needs 51 more kills to achieve 1,000 career kills.
“I’ve been working towards this since my freshman year because I always felt I could do it, especially having four years on varsity,” Skurka shared. “Reaching this milestone would signify all the hard work paying off.”
Skurka has committed to Seton Hill and has been instrumental this season, achieving team highs of 195 kills, 115 digs, and 219 serve receptions before Lake Central’s match against conference leader Chesterton. Coach Naveed Nizam acknowledges Skurka’s growing legacy within a team boasting balanced offense and skilled hitters.
“It’s a massive part of her legacy here at Lake Central,” Nizam said. “We aim to establish something called the 1,000 club, recognizing players who achieve 1,000 assists, kills, or digs, and create a commemorative plaque for those names.”
Skurka is appreciated not only for her skills but also as a leader and likable player, qualities her peers admire and aspire to emulate. Senior outside hitter Arielle Carter-Reed, inspired by Skurka, shared, “We’ve played together since we were 12, and Kailey’s success motivates me.” Carter-Reed has achieved 91 kills, 109 digs, and a team-high 23 aces this season.
“Competing alongside her elevates my game,” Carter-Reed stated. “If she excels, it drives me to do the same. I respect her feedback and want to meet the high expectations she sets for herself and the team.”
Many of Skurka’s teammates have followed her lead this season, working towards lofty goals. “Our aim is to tie for first in the conference and win sectionals for the first time,” Skurka said. “With the talent we have, winning is within reach; it depends on which team shows up on the day.”
As Skurka transitions to college, she carries with her the same competitive spirit. “I’m eager to meet new people and compete at a higher level,” she expressed. “I enjoy the speed, challenge, and excitement of the game, and also look forward to new friendships and experiences as I start this new chapter in my life.”
